Have you tried or thought to create your custom Effect in Adobe After Effect?
In fact, Built-in Effect and Third-party effect are creating by a very hard and time taking development process with After Effect SDK in Visual Studio and it’s so hard to create plugin individuality for After Effect by using SDK.
On other hands, we have Expression controllers effect that allows us to create our Custom Controllers for the layer like presets but the problem with these process is that they are not looking like a Normal effect and they are well organized and we can build custom UI for them so what is the solution?
Another type of Effects in After Effect called Presets Effect or Pseudo Effects that have Different controllers, Groups and Custom Text that looks like an Effect Plugin and control different properties of layers. We will be using a script called “Flex Effector” that you can Download from Videhive.net marketplace.
Installing the Script:
After Download the script extract it form the zip file and paste the script in the following directory:
Windows : Program File/Adobe/After Effect/Script/Script UI Panel
Mac : Application / After Effect/Script/Script UI Panel
2. Open After Effect
Once you placed the script on the following paths, open your After Effect and go to Window menu and click on the last script “Flex effector”.
If you didn’t see the script on the windows for whatever reasons you have to go to File>Script>Open Script and the select the script and run it manually. If the script didn’t run and you get you an error of Network
If the script didn’t run and you get you an error of Network, then go to Edit>Preferences>General and on general find the Allow script to access network than checked on and click ok.
3.Create a Simple Shape
For creating a working effect you have to create a main element like text or shape to link the properties with each other.
Create a new Composition (CMD/CTRL+N), Go to the toolbar and click on Shape tool and draw a shape like Oval or Square.
4.Using Flex Effector
Go to the script and you see a panel like the below picture, on the left side you see a bunch of icons that represent an expression controllers, these controllers are the same like expression controllers on the Effect/presets panel.
On the left-hand side, you can click and drag whatever controller you want from the color controller to Angle and Checkbox. Let’s click on Color controller then click on Point controller and drag it inside of the panel.
You can change the name of the controller by selecting them and pressing enter and then type the name of controllers and enter again.
You can change default values like in here we can change the default color and values of our controllers.
You can add some text at the end of the effect as well, by clicking on the text icon on the left-hand side and then type you text.
You add groups as well if you have wanted to organize parameters for ease of use.
After having your desired effect and controller you can either save the preset or you can apply it directly on your layer.
4.Applying Effect on Layer
By selecting our Shape layer and by clicking on the Apply layer in Flex effector you would have the effect and controllers right on your layer.
Now that we have our effect, its useless if you change the values you wont see any kind of result why? because you havent linked the parameters of the shape layer to our custom controller which we created. For our first controller which is going to control Color of the shape .
- Open the shape parameter Shape layer> Contents>Shape>Fill.
- Hold alt and click on the timer of fill parameters to create an expression
- Clear the default expression and then by selecting the Pick wipe tools under the expression controller
- Drag the wipe controller to our Color effect controller.
- Select the shape layer and press “S” for toggling down the scale parameter of the layer (You can link any parameters that you like, but in here we are going to link scale to the point controller)
- Same as what we did with the Color parameter, Holding alt and clicking on the time icon of the scale parameter to create an expression.
- Drag the pick wipe tool to our effect point controller.
Now if you change the value of our custom effect you see that it would affect our shape parameters.
5. Saving the Effect as a Presets
You can easily save the presets which we created for further usage. Select the Layer and go to Animation> Save Presets and enter the name of the presets and save it somewhere on your computer. You can either put the presets on After Effect/ Presets folder or you can go to Animation/ Apply presets by selecting your present you can apply it on whatever layer that you selected.
